Sweden Sackpipa bagpipe

"Swedish Bagpipe, also known as "Dalasäckpipa" or simply "Säckpipa", is a popular instrument among beginner musicians due to its low pressure and soft, pleasant sound. It is made in the keys of A or G, with the most common key being A. Unlike European practice, the drone tone is not set in the main key of A, but rather in its fifth, E. It is also possible to make a säckpipa with two E (Mi) drones and a tunable A-B chanter. Swedish bagpipes are primarily a solo instrument, but can also be played with other Swedish bagpipes or in accompaniment with a violin. The range of a säckpipa covers one octave plus an introductory tone that is different from the main (drone) tone by a whole or half tone." Historically, the introduction tone hole was used for tuning the chanter and was located on the side or on the back of the chanter. Only for modern masters who are restoring and improving bagpipes, this hole served to expand the range. The introduction tone can be adjusted through the following sound hole, but the more common practice is to partially close this hole. To do this, a piece of beeswax is taken and attached to the edge of the end of the internal channel. By changing the shape of the wax, the introduction tone can be adjusted to D or Es.
The traditional tuning of the saz is a rising melodic la-minor (not an eolic tuning that corresponds to the natural minor), starting from the fourth chanter tone (excluding the tuning tone). The half-tones are located between the 3rd and 4th, and between the 5th and 6th chanter tones. in relation to A tonality, the half-tones are located between the 2nd and 3rd, and between the 7th and 8th steps, i.e. g# and c# respectively. In common parlance, this tonality is referred to as Swedish A. Today, the range is usually expanded by 1 or 2 tones.
Regarding the fingering, both open and semi-closed fingering are used on the Swedish Nyckelharpa today. The semi-closed fingering, with two lower holes for the big fingers, provides the best opportunities for musical expressiveness as it allows for playing with various ornamentation such as vibrato and slurs.
