Shamanic Drum
A traditional shamanic instrument deeply rooted in Yakutia and the vast regions of Central Siberia. This type of drum is widely used by the Evenki, Sakha, Dolgan, Verkhoyansk Evens, Nganasan, Enets, and Tundra Nenets. Considered a livingcompanion of the shaman, the drum symbolizes a reindeer (among Northern Tungus and Samoyedic peoples) or a bull (among the Sakha).
Its frame is flat and of medium width, with resonating bumps attached along the outer rim and additional metal elements, rings, and cone-shaped tubes fixed inside. The membrane is traditionally made from young reindeer or calfskin. The cross-shaped handle — wood or metal — is tied to the frame and often decorated with numerous symbolic pendants representing shamanic spirits.
The Central Siberian drum originally formed within the ritual practice of the Tungus (Evenki and Evens) and later absorbed influences from Samoyedic cultures and the Sakha people. Two main variants developed: Eastern and Western. Among Samoyedic nations, the design also reflects the influence of the Yenisei drum tradition, especially the use of sacred drawings that symbolize the Universe.
